TransUnion data hack of 54 million private SA records
The hacker group N4aughtysecTU that claims to be Brazilian stole 4TB of Transunion’s database last month and has claimed a ransom of $15 million (about R241 million).
According to an article by Business Tech, the hacker claimed that 54 million personal records of South African customers have been accessed and “the information it is in possession of includes anything from credit scores, banking details and ID numbers” and threatened to leak ABSA, FNB and Standard Bank data, information that had been obtained by MyBroadband.
TransUnion have said that they will not pay the ransom and is “providing information on how affected individuals and businesses can protect themselves, including free subscriptions to TransUnion’s tools to detect identity-related and business-related threats. For consumers, this includes free access to their personal credit reports and alerts up to 31 December 2023, and for businesses, this includes free access to their business credit reports up to 31 December 2023.”
